Wiener Neustadt is a city in Lower Austria south of Vienna, near the Leitha river.
It preserves the ducal castle of the twelfth century and the Gothic chapel of Saint George (XV century), with the tomb of Maximilian I of Habsburg.
It is the seat of the Austrian Army Military Academy and today is an important industrial center and railway junction.
It was built at the behest of Leopold V of Babenberg, Duke of Austria, towards the end of the twelfth century, with the aim of presiding over the borders of its territories threatened by the incursions of the Magyars. Strategically located, it also became a major commercial center.
