2 euro commemorative coin dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci, Brilliant Uncirculated.
ISSUE DATE: 4th APRIL 2019
Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci was a man of genius and universal talent of the Renaissance who fully embodied the spirit of his era, bringing it to the greatest forms of expression in the most diverse fields of art and knowledge.
He dealt with architecture and sculpture up to scenography, music and anatomy.
It is considered one of the greatest geniuses of humanity.
The coin depicts a detail of the work "Il Battesimo di Cristo" by Andrea del Verrocchio, Leonardo da Vinci and other workshop painters, dating from between 1475 and 1478 and preserved in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
Master Verrocchio set the composition and partly painted the two main figures of the Christ and the Baptist, with his linear and nervous style derived from the specialization in jewelery.
Later on, two other collaborators were involved.
Only in a third phase, the final one, was Leonardo da Vinci, a pupil of Verrocchio, asked to complete the painting trying to standardize the parts already painted.
He is responsible for the sweet face of the angel in profile (depicted on the coin), where his characteristic shaded style is noted, but also the transparent oil glazes that unified the plans of the landscape in depth and softened the body of Christ.
