2 euro coin dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Sistine Chapel Restoration, Brilliant Uncirculated.
The restoration of the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel was one of the most important restorations of the 20th century.
The Sistine Chapel was built by Pope Sixtus IV within the Vatican Palaces immediately north of St. Peter's Basilica and completed around 1481.
The walls of the Chapel were decorated by a large number of Italian Renaissance painters of the late 15th century, such as Ghirlandaio, Perugino, and Botticelli.
The Chapel was further frescoed under Pope Julius II covering the vault by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512 and with the famous Last Judgment, commissioned by Pope Clement VII and completed in 1541, again by Michelangelo.
